The State Key Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering (SKLBCE) is affiliated with the Institute of Process Engineering (formerly the Institute of Chemical Metallurgy), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It was approved for establishment by the State Commission of Planning and Development (SCPD) in 1988 and opened to the public in 1992. SKLBCE was officially approved by the SCPD in 1995, and successively passed three assessments organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2017. The current director is Prof. Guanghui Ma, and the chairman of the academic committee is Prof. Guoping Zhao, member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Biochemical engineering, which was founded in 1980s, is an interdiscipline of biotechnology and chemical engineering. On the one hand, it introduces biotechnology to the traditional industries with chemical industry as a representative to address the growing tension of resources and environmental issues. On the other hand, it applies the theory and experience of chemical engineering to biological engineering, and solves the bottleneck of biological products from the laboratory to the industrialization process. So in recent years, it is called bioprocess engineering. It is an important constitute of modern biological technology and the bridge to create economic value and to serve community.
The laboratory is based on technological innovation, positioning in the national energy, resources, medicine and other significant demand. From the practical application, the basic scientific problems of biochemical engineering is extracted, and the basic research on the combination of theory and application is carried out, and the technical bottleneck in the process of industrialization is emphasized. The main research is to utilize a variety of resources, especially biomass renewable resources as raw materials to manufacture fuel, chemicals, materials, pharmaceuticals, food and other commodities through the three processes of biochemical reaction, separation and formulation.
The recent major research directions: (1) fundamental research: bioreaction engineering, bioseparation engineering and bioformulation engineering; (2) applied research: biochemicals, biomedicine and vaccine, biometallurgy and environmental biotreatment, and bioengineering media and equipment. Research achievements include the National Natural Science Prize, National Technological Invention Prize, National Science and Technology Progress Prize, and Beijing Science and Technology Prize etc. During the past five years, more than 800 SCI papers were published and 402 patents authorized. Among them, SCI papers were cited more than 7000 times by others.
SKLBCE has an outstanding scientific research team composed of young and middle-aged academic leaders. The laboratory has 76 staffs, including 36 professors. Among them, there are 7 winners of National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 winner of National Natural Science Foundation--Outstanding Youth Foundation, 2 chief scientists of national 973 programs. During the past five years, 200 students got Master or Ph.D. degree and more than 300 biochemical engineers from all over the country participated in the short-term training organized by SKLBCE.
Since opening in 1992, SKLBCE has completed nearly 100 important projects, including the National Key Basic Research Program (973 Program), the National 863 high-tech projects,National Natural Science Foundation Projects, etc. The laboratory has cooperated with enterprises or companies to achieve nearly 100 successful practical applications. The laboratory also set 100 research programs for other researchers in the past few years,and bring together many outstanding scientists home and abroad working in SKLBCE. In addition, many scholars from foreign countries, such as Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom visited the laboratory each year. SKLBCE is also active in organizing and participating in biochemical engineering academic conferences, and has hosted a number of influential international and domestic conferences.
In the past decades, SKLBCE has become the research base representing the level of domestic biochemical engineering. With the strong support of the Institute of Process Engineering, CAS, SKLBCE will continue to develop new process for products manufacture to achieve high quality, high yield, low consumption and environment-friendly processes, making more and more important contributions to the sustainable economy development.
