Dr. Chao Yang is a professor and the Director of Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a Cheung Kong Distinguished Professor at University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his Ph.D. and B.Sc. degrees in 1998 and 1993, respectively, both from Nanjing Tech University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Institute of Chemical Metallurgy, Chinese Academy of Sciences from 1998 to 2000, and a visiting scientist at Cornell University from 2005 to 2006. He was awarded the Beijing Scholars in 2023, the Cheung Kong Distinguished Professor in 2015, the National People Plan for Science and Technology Innovation Leader in 2016, and the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2010.
He won the Second Prize of China State Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2023 and 2019, the Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation, Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation (Hong Kong) in 2016, the Second Prize of China State Technological Invention Award in 2015, the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize from Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2014, the China Chemistry Society–BASF Youth Innovation Prize in 2013, the Asia Research Award from the Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan, and the Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Award both in 2012, the National Award for Youth in Science and Technology and the Young Scientist Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences both in 2011, the Mao Yi-Sheng Science and Technology Award in 2010, and the Second Prize of China State Natural Science Award in 2009.
His research is mainly focused on multiphase reactor engineering, mass transfer, computational fluid dynamics and green chemical engineering, especially the numerical simulation and experimental diagnosis of multiphase flow and transport phenomena in various multiphase reactors and crystallizers such as stirred tanks, loop reactors, packed-beds, microreactors and membrane reactors. He has published 358 papers in peer-reviewed journals, and holds 165 patents and 52 computer software copyrights. He has supervised 41 Ph.D. students and 39 M.S. students. He is an Associate Editors-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering and a Section Executive Editors-in-Chief of Engineering.
