Hongbin XU, Male, a chemical & metallurgical engineer, was born in Xinmi City, Henan Province in 1974. He graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University in 1996, received a master's degree from the Institute of Chemical Metallurgy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999 and a doctorate degree from the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004. He is currently working as a professor, PhD candidate supervisor and head of the Research Team of Chemical & Metallurgical Product Engineering in the Institute of Process Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is also a member of the Chromium Salt Expert Group of the Professional Committee of Inorganic Acids, Alkalis, and Salts of the Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China, a Deputy Secretary General of the Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Committee of the China Inorganic Salt Industry Association, and a member of the Expert Committee of the Professional Committee on the Resource utilization and Disposal of Hazardous Waste of the China Recycling Economy Association.

As one of the middle-aged and young academic backbones from the National Engineering Laboratory for Hydrometallurgical Cleaner Production Technology and the Key Laboratory of Green Process and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he has long been committed to the new technology development and application for the clean extraction, efficient transformation and high-value utilization of China national strategically scarce or characteristic mineral resources including chromium, aluminum, vanadium, silicon and boron. His research team has also set up a close partnership and cooperation with several domestic leading or advantageous companies in China. They have proposed a couple of originally innovative technologies including the alkali pressure leaching of the oxide ore of amphoteric metal, the hydrogen reduction or carbonation of the aqueous solution of oxometallate, and the low-temperature acidic roasting decomposition of the polymetallic composite ore and metallurgical slag. They have also completed a number of industrially demonstrative verification and technical transfer.

Up to the March of 2021, he has won a 2nd prize of China National Technical Invention Award, a 1st prize of Scientific & Technical Progress Award from the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, a 1st prize of the Scientific & Technical Award of the China Recycling Economy Association, 2 prizes of Inorganic Chemical Industry Sci-Tech Award from the Inorganic Acids, Alkalis and Salts Professional Committee of China Chemical Industry and Engineering Society, as well as the Lu Jia-xi Youth Talent Award from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has authorized 86 Chinese invention patents, 8 utility model patents and 1 U.S. patent. He also published 156 academic journal papers and supervised 5 master's and 4 doctoral students.
