  • Green Light for Titanium White Industry

The first national clean production demonstration project of titanium white by sub-molten salt method with a thousand-ton level was established at Zibo city, Shandong province, eastern of China. The project was jointly cooperated by the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IPE-CAS) and Shandong province. On August 26, the project passed acceptance by the Bureau of High-Tech Research and Development Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The new technology of sub-molten salt utilized in the project was a green method for titanium white industrialization. It solved the problems of low efficiency and heavy pollution of the traditional sulfuric acid method. The conversion of titanium was increased by 10 percent to reach 97 percent and the regeneration circle of medium sodium hydroxide reached to 90 percent with the new method. The acid waste gas and residue emissions achieved zero release. The waste acid and acid waste water emissions also fell–reduced by 80 percent comparing to the traditional method.

IPE-CAS had the independent intellectualpropertyrights of the technologies utilized in the project, including novel reaction system of sodium hydroxide sub-molten salt/high-titanium slag, dissociation of alkaline media by Ion Exchange Method (IEM), short process for preparation of high-concentration titanium sulfate solution, and deep removal of trace silicon in high acidity system. These technologies were continuously developed in three years since the project performed in 2008. A novel equipment rotary continuous reactor was also developed in the project.
