Speaker: Prof. Charley Wu Date and Time: 10:00-11:00am, October 12, 2017 Venue: Meeting Room 506, IPE Building Title:Process Engineering at Multiscale – a Surrey Perspective Abstract: Process engineering concerns the conversion of raw materials into value-added products through translating customers’ needs into production systems in a wide range of industries, such as chemical, petrochemical, food, advanced material and pharmaceutical industries. Process engineering hence involves the design, optimization and intensification of chemical and biological processes, which are typically multiscale problems. In this talk, a brief overview of the wide range of research activities related to process engineering at the University of Surrey will be presented, which include energy and materials, digital & process innovation, water processing technology, health & food, formulations and products. In addition, how a multiscale approach can be taken to tackle challenging problems associated with process engineering will be illustrated. Furthermore, how the strategic partnership among Unilever, IPE and Surrey can be devised to further advance research agenda in process engineering will be discussed. About the speaker: Prof. Chuan-Yu (Charley) Wu is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, the University of Surrey. UK. He is currently an executive editor for Powder Technology, a leading peer reviewed journal on particle systems. He recently co-authored a monograph on “Particle Technology and Engineering” published by Elsevier in 2016 and edited two books entitled “Discrete Element Modelling of Particulate Media” and “Particulate Materials: Synthesis, Characterisation, Processing and Modelling” published by RSC publishing. He also edited five journal special issues and published over 100 scientific papers. He has given more than 60 invited presentations and seminars at international conferences, industrial companies and universities worldwide.
