Since 1990s, ion liquid has been attracting attentions because of their non volatilities, non flammability, conductivity and catalytic characteristics. Ion liquids have recognized as green chemical media/materials of new generation to replace the traditional heavily polluted media therefore dramatically change the conventional chemical process. It would be a new round of industry revolution. For instance, ion liquids would replace about 300 commonly used organic solvents (global emission of 170 million tons per year, worth 6 billion USD),like benzene (may cause leukemia and cancer), formaldehyde (damage human immune system), CS2 (flammable and explosive, cause neural damages) .Many companies have been developing new processes by using ion liquids as solvents or catalysts, like BASF (using ion liquid as deacid agent in viscose fiber process), EASTMAN (1000t/a 2,5-Dihydrofuran process), Ion (CO2 capture Process) .

To tackle the problems in ion liquid applications and promote the application scales, IPE organized No 366 Xiangshan Science Conference focusing on Key Scientific Issues in Ion Liquid application. More than 50 experts and professionals from different scientific subjects were presented at the conference was held between Dec 22 to 24, 2009. Big international companies like CNPC, Sinopec and Merck, also dispatched their representatives.

The main topics of the conference were:

1)   Correlation between the structures of ion liquids and their performance;

2)   Chemistry and Engineering with ion liquid as media;

3)   Design and preparation of cost-effective ion liquids;

4)   Prospects of Ion Liquids and case study.
