April 24, 2010, Beijing—a launching ceremony for CAS High-Performance Distributed GPU Supercomputing System was held at IPE. Professor Yongxiang Lu, CAS President, Professor Jinghai Li, CAS vice president, Professor Maicun Deng, CAS General Secretary, Professor Tieniu Tan, CAS Deputy General Secretary and Director Lu Zhao from Ministry of Finance were presented at the meeting.
This computer system, with aggregated computing capacity of 6 petafalops, consisted of 10 sets of 100gflops computing system from Lenovo and Dawning. The development and deploy of the supercomputer were sponsoredby special funds from both state government and CAS. The system will serve many key state programs and national natural sciences fund projects as well as big corporations, covering the industries including chemical engineering, metallurgy, oil and mining.
In his speech, President Lu pointed out that the high-performance GPU supercomputing system was a big victory in CAS Knowledge Innovation Program III. It indicated that China has the ability to use high-performance computation to meet the challenges in research and engineering practices. China has become one of the world leaders in collaboration of hardware and software and cost and efficiency.
