RESEARCH ACTIVITIES & ACHIEVEMENTS
Prof. Zhang’s research interests focus on the fundamental and application of ILs for many years, with an emphasis on the structure-property relationship and molecule design of ILs, as well as process scale-up and green system integration. His work promotes and extends the application of ILs in the aspects of reaction, separation and electrochemistry, and a number of industrial plants have been successfully established. He has made original achievements in the aspect of theories, principles and methodologies, and established a knowledge system of ILs from molecule across cluster, equipment to system, which has made significant contribution to the chemical engineering science and actively promoted the progress of industrial applications of ILs.
Prof. Zhang is the Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Green Energy & Environment, and was invited into the advisory boards of "Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research", "Greenhouse Gases: Science and Technology", "Science in China (Chemistry)" and so on. He has authored 336 peer-reviewed papers in the well-known international chemistry and engineering journals, including the top four journals in chemical engineering field such as AIChE J., Chem. Eng. Sci., Chem. Eng. J. and Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., and the high impact chemistry journals such as Chem. Soc. Rev., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Chem. Commun. and Green Chem. He was invited to write more than 10 review papers, as well as 6 monographs and 6 chapters by major publishers, such as Elsevier and Springer. In the past 15 years, he has been invited to give more than 50 plenaries, keynotes or invited lectures in the important conferences/symposia, including Gordon Research Conference on Green Chemistry, APCIL, WRF, PPEPPD, AIChE annual meeting, ICGSC, ICCDU and etc. His publications have been cited for 5591 times by other scientists and a citation H-index of 41 (according to Web of Science).
Prof. Zhang has also made pioneering achievements in the innovation and application of ILs in green process engineering. He has filed 75 issued patents including 5 PCT/U.S./Japan patents. He has developed the first commercial process for ILs production and several novel ILs-enhanced green technologies in gas separation, chemical production and electrolysis/battery electrolytes, which have been well recognized by the industries, such as Ford Motor (USA), BASF (Germany), Bekaert (Belgium), Mitsubishi Materials Corp. (Japan), Sinopec (China), PetroChina (China), CNOOC (China), and etc. The products of ILs and electrolytes have been widely used by more than 200 institutions and companies.
Due to his excellent work, Prof. Zhang has won Second-class Award of National Natural Science of China (2010), First-class Award of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association (CPCIA) Scientific and Technological Progress Prize (2009), Second-class Award of CPCIA Technological Invents Prize (2008), Second-class Award of Beijing Municipality Scientific and Technological Innovation Prize (2007). Also, he won a number of personal awards, such as, Thousands of People Plan Key Project Leader Talent (2013), CPCIA Youth Scientific and Technological Outstanding Contribution Prize (2009), National Talent in the Ten Million New Century Talents Project (2009), CCS-BASF Youth Knowledge Innovation Prize (2008), National Science Funding for Distinguished Young Scholars of China (2006), One hundred Talents Program of CAS (2001), and Chief Scientist of “973” Program (National Basic Research Program of China). Also, he was honoured with Hou Debang Chemical Science & Technology Achievement Award (2014), the highest award of chemical engineering society in China.
Besides the academic and engineering contributions, Prof. Zhang has also made outstanding contributions to the exchange and cooperation among the developing countries. He has put efforts on establishing CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence for Green Technology (CEGT) and served as the Director of CEGT. His activities cover high talent cultivation and training, academic exchange, conferences organization, technology cooperation and so on. Now more than 20 Master and PhD students from developing countries such as Pakistan, Thailand, Nigeria, India, etc. are studying in CEGT, the number of individual visits reaches ~20 times. Series of CAS-TWAS Symposia on Green Technology (e.g., SGT2012, 2013, AES2014, GreenTech 2015, GCE2016) and training schools have been successfully held with hundreds of scientists/experts and students. He is also actively involved in the application of the advanced green technologies in the developing countries through joint efforts.
